Abu Garcia Neoprene Cover Round Reel, Size-6000

$8.99

Wide-spool Record Ambassadeur 6000

In the process of moving...I found a buried treasure.
My Uncle Dean, who past away about 4 years ago, gave me a MINT Abu Garcia 6000 casting reel. It's gorgeous, looks like it's never been used. It has a smallish 'one handle' reel lever, and a dial on the right hand side that looks like a cast control of some sort....it's numbered from 1-10 on the dial.
I have a couple of questions about it, and hope that I can find some answers here.
1. Can I replace the handle with a more useable double sided handle, or a bigger power handle on it like you'd see on the 6500 Big Game?
2. Does it have the same line capacity of the 6500 series reels...245 yards of 14 lb test line?
3. It does not have Instant Anti-Reverse. Can this be 'added' to the reel to bring it up to modern specs?
4. I've caught Jacks and big reds on light tackle before...I was just wondering if this is 'strong enough' to deal with jacks, smacks, and other surf creatures when slinging a decent sized spoon or plug?
5. Is upgrading to ABEC 5 or 7 Bearings worth it for more casting distance?
I'm thinking of mating this reel to about an 8.5-9 foot casting rod for throwing lures and small weights/baits.
Any advice on upgrading, taking care of, and using this thing would be greatly appreciated.

!. Yes, but the piece of the brass stem protruding from the reel is shorter than the newer, 6000/6500 reels. So what I have done, is counter sink the area, by drilling, so the chrome nut will hold firmly

2. yes

3. no and no. The reel uses the A/R dog and ratchet type

4 they have Carbontex drags for them, but I caught decent bass on them.
But anything large? No way

5 If it's a red, it will probably have bushings. And oddly enough, there is no bearing equivalent to those bushing. If it's a black 6000c, than yes. And the bearings are 3x10x4.

The reel shown in the picture is clearly an ABU stamped reel

Fred's Classic ABU Reel Information - Lure Lore

The false albacore were about 120 yards out, across the last visible bar, and they were tearing up the water. Gulls and gannets were diving into the chopped-up bait and anglers were lined up, but they were casting short of where the party was happening. From time to time, you could see glass minnows flipping out of the surface in a long stripe. Most of the anglers were casting spinning reels with eight- or nine-foot rods; I was using a nine-foot rod with an old Abu 6000 reel with the casting weights removed. It required an educated thumb, but I could cast a Sting Silver a little over 100 yards with it. I was using 12-pound test line to increase my distance. I only managed one false albacore before the bite moved further out, but I was the only angler in the crowd that connected. Afterwards, I got a lot of questions about using a casting reel for throwing metal in the surf. It felt good to be the only one to connect, but it only happened because I had the right rod, reel, and line combination.
